It's Nice to Meet You!
About Me: I was listening to an interview by Jenna Fischer about the Creative Career Path and she said, “If you were a law student fresh out of school, you wouldn’t jump directly into the big leagues and expect to be litigating in the courtroom on day one. You would need to prove yourself, practice, and work your way up! This is the same philosophy we need to apply to being a professional in the creative field.”
I could not agree with this philosophy more and it illustrates what I have been doing since 2009 when I began work on my first picture book while I was in art school. I graduated in 2011 with a dual degree in Children’s Book Illustration and Typographic Design for Literacy and have been spending my time since saturating myself with knowledge and practice: I have been in the trenches learning everything I possibly can. I worked with a business mentor to create a small press so that I could begin producing and testing work. I have created 11 children’s books all of which I have learned to market, sell, and promote. I have also completed an Masters of Publishing to learn more about the industry so that I can contribute to a product's success. It has been a journey, to say the least! Now, seven years later, I have learned so very much. I am selling my products consistently, I am honored to be featured in author visits and book expos, and I have come to realize that it is time to pursue the next step: working with an agent. I am very serious about my work and am prepared to be a true business partner and teammate. Thank you for taking the time to review my book projects. |

Book Project #5: Be Kind
Synopsis: We are all equal participants in shaping the world that we share. It is up to each one of us to make choices not for the benefit of self, but for the benefit of all living things on earth. So how do we inspire this mentality? We teach our young ones to, Be Kind.
Be Kind asks the reader to think: if you were an ant, tree, bird, lion, cat, or dog, how would you want someone to treat you? By identifying the feelings of living things, the reader is able to understand their impact on the world around them. The Kindness Oath, sits at the end of the book and is an experience that can be shared at home with families, in classrooms, in Kindness Clubs, and especially during author visits. Book Type: Be Kind is a picture book targeted to girls and boys, ages 4-8. Book Notes: ***Be Kind was published to test in a limited print run to test effectiveness. In 10 Months, 500 copies have all been sold privately (marketing has been kept intentionally limited), I have done ten school visits discussing Be Kind with ages Pre-K-4 as well as Graduate Teachers, and K-12 teachers and have three additional visits scheduled for this fall. This book has been incredibly popular in its test phase. |
